Costa Mesa Pool Builder & Backyard Remodeling
Costa Mesa is named for the ground it sits on, and after thirty years of building here we can tell you it matters.
Most of the city occupies a raised terrace above the Santa Ana River floodplain. Ten minutes west, in Fountain Valley and Huntington Beach, we’re building in former wetlands. Drop toward the river on the west side or the Back Bay on the southeast, and conditions change again. Two lots a mile apart in this city can need genuinely different engineering — which is why we pull a geotechnical report on every project and design the shell to what it says, rather than to a standard detail.
PoolMax is based in Fountain Valley, about ten minutes from most of Costa Mesa. We design and build custom pools and spas, pool remodels, hardscape, outdoor kitchens, fire features, and complete backyard environments.
Custom Pool Builders Serving Costa Mesa
Costa Mesa fits roughly 115,000 people into just under 16 square miles, and lot sizes vary as much as the ground does.
Eastside Costa Mesa and Mesa Verde carry the larger parcels — room for a full-size pool and spa, generous decking, an outdoor kitchen, and landscape designed as one environment rather than assembled over years. These are the properties where a complete backyard build makes the most sense.
The central tracts — Mesa del Mar, Halecrest, College Park, Freedom Homes — have conventional 1960s and 70s lots with real back yards, and a large inventory of original pools now several decades old.
Westside Costa Mesa has tighter lots, where lot coverage and hardscape limits become a real design constraint. This is where compact pool design earns its keep. A well-planned plunge pool with an attached spa and thoughtfully placed decking can transform a small yard — and knowing what will actually fit before the design starts saves everyone time.
Back Bay properties bring grade and views, and sometimes engineered retaining. We build retaining in-house with our own equipment rather than subcontracting it, and we price it in the original estimate rather than adding it after excavation.
Pool Remodeling and Resurfacing in Costa Mesa
A large share of Costa Mesa’s pools date from the 1950s through the 1970s. If yours came with the house, the shell is often still structurally sound — what’s failed is everything on top of it: the interior finish, the waterline tile, the coping, the deck, and the equipment.
Replacing those transforms a backyard for a fraction of what a new pool costs. We work in PebbleTec, mini-pebble, polished quartz, and plaster, and a remodel typically includes new tile and coping, updated decking, modern variable-speed equipment, and LED lighting.
Whether that’s the right answer for your pool depends on the shell, which we assess before recommending anything. When a shell isn’t worth keeping, we’ll tell you that too.

Permits & City Requirements
Costa Mesa runs permit applications through its TESSA system, and the City is emphatic that submittals must be entered digitally rather than uploaded as scans of paper forms. We handle the permit process for our clients.

Costa Mesa Pool FAQs
Does PoolMax build new pools in Costa Mesa?
Yes. We design and build custom swimming pools, spas, and complete outdoor environments throughout Costa Mesa and Orange County.
Can you work on a small Westside lot?
Yes. Compact pools, plunge pools, and spillover spas work well on tighter lots. The constraint is usually coverage and equipment placement, and we work that out before drawing rather than after.
Do you remodel older Costa Mesa pools?
That's a large part of what we do here. A new interior finish, tile, coping, decking, and equipment can change a pool completely. We assess the shell first and give you a straight answer.
Do you handle the permits?
Yes. We handle the permits for Costa Mesa pool and backyard projects.
Request a Costa Mesa Pool Estimate
We’ll walk the property, tell you what the ground and the lot will actually allow, and give you a line-item estimate you can compare honestly against any other bid.
