Long Beach Pool Builder & Backyard Remodeling
Long Beach covers more distinct building conditions than any city we work in. A canal lot in Naples and a half-acre parcel in Park Estates are four miles apart and have almost nothing in common — different access, different ground, different engineering, different design problem.
PoolMax is based in Fountain Valley, a short drive down the coast, and we’ve been building in Southern California for thirty years.
One thing to confirm first: Signal Hill is a separate incorporated city entirely surrounded by Long Beach, and some addresses in the area are unincorporated Los Angeles County. Different jurisdiction, different requirements. It’s a five-minute check that saves weeks.
Custom Pool Builders Serving Long Beach
Naples, the Peninsula, and Belmont Shore have narrow lots with canal and bay frontage, alley access, and groundwater close to the surface. Compact pools, plunge pools, and attached spas suit these properties, and access planning often determines what’s buildable before design begins. Coastal exposure also means specifying non-porous tile, corrosion-resistant hardware, and sealed equipment enclosures — standard components age fast this close to the water.
Park Estates, Bixby Hill, Virginia Country Club, and El Dorado Park Estates have the larger parcels, with room for a full-size pool and spa, generous decking, an outdoor kitchen, and landscape planned as one environment.
The mid-century neighborhoods — Los Altos, Lakewood Village, Bixby Knolls, California Heights, Rancho Estates — carry a heavy concentration of 1940s through 60s homes with original pools. That’s the remodel and resurfacing market, and it’s substantial.
Bluff Park and Belmont Heights bring grade and view considerations, and sometimes retaining. We engineer and build retaining in-house with our own equipment.
Pool Remodeling and Resurfacing in Long Beach
Mid-century Long Beach pools are frequently worth keeping. The shells from that period were well built, and what’s failed is the interior finish, tile, coping, decking, and equipment.
We resurface in PebbleTec, mini-pebble, polished quartz, and plaster, and a full remodel typically includes new tile and coping, updated decking, modern variable-speed equipment, and LED lighting.
On older pools we also look at the drain covers. Covers have a service life and become brittle with age, and it’s a straightforward thing to address during a remodel.

Long Beach Permits & City Requirements
Long Beach runs an appointment-based Permit Center with specific rules about scheduling, arrival times, and walk-in windows — worth knowing before a trip downtown. The City’s Building & Safety Bureau also reviews development proposals near oil and gas wells, which is worth asking about on any Long Beach property before you design a backyard.
We handle the permit process for our clients. For contacts, appointment rules, and the questions worth asking, see our Long Beach permit and planning resource page.
Long Beach Pool FAQs
Can you build on a Naples or Peninsula lot?
Yes. Narrow lots with alley access usually mean a compact pool with an attached spa, careful access planning, and dewatering during excavation.
Am I in Long Beach or Signal Hill?
Signal Hill is a separate city surrounded by Long Beach, and some addresses are unincorporated LA County. Confirm before anything else—it changes the entire permit path.
Do you remodel mid-century pools?
Regularly. Shells from that era are often sound; the finish, tile, coping, decking, and equipment are what need replacing.
Do you handle the permits?
Yes. See our Long Beach resource page for the City's contacts and appointment rules.
