POOL & BACKYARD PROJECT RESOURCES

Pool & Backyard Project Resource Center

Building department contacts, permit information, and planning guides for every city we serve.

Free to use

There’s nothing to fill in, and you don’t have to be a client. We built it because informed homeowners ask better questions and get better projects — including from us.

Before you build a pool, you’ll deal with a building department. Which one, what they need, and what to ask them varies more than most homeowners expect — even between cities a few minutes apart.

We’ve put together a page for each city we work in: the contacts, the permit process in that city’s own terms, the questions worth asking before you commission a design, and a planning checklist.

How To Check For Certain

Call the building department you think covers you and give them your address. They’ll tell you immediately, and if it’s not them, they’ll usually tell you who it is. It’s a two-minute call that removes all doubt.

By City

City Resource Pages

Each page covers that city’s building department contacts, permit process, online tools, questions worth asking before you design, and a homeowner planning checklist.

Fountain Valley

Building, Planning, and Public Works contacts, the City’s permit portal, and what the local water table means for a pool project.

Huntington Beach

Permit Center hours, the HB ACA portal and “Get in Line” service, how the City’s multi-department permit process works, and the oil well question every HB homeowner should ask.

Costa Mesa

Building Safety contacts, the TESSA permit system and its digital-only rules, and how to reach the inspector assigned to your inspection.

Newport Beach

The one-stop Permit Center, the City’s live counter queue, coastal zone questions, and the Residential Building Records search — useful if you have an older pool and no paperwork.

Irvine

Why your HOA matters more than the City here, how IrvineReady! handles residential pool permits, and the appointment system for in-person help.

Garden Grove

Building & Safety contacts, construction hours, how to request your property’s records, and the City’s own case for why permits matter at resale and for insurance.

Seal Beach

Building & Safety contacts, the City’s online permitting platform, coastal zone questions, and where pool equipment placement fits into plan check.

Los Alamitos

Counter and inspection hours, the online Permit Center, and two City requirements worth asking any contractor about before you hire them.

Rossmoor

Rossmoor permits go through Orange County, not a city. County contacts, the permit portal, and what that means for your project.

Long Beach

Permit Center contacts and appointment rules, the City’s online tools, the Signal Hill jurisdiction check, and how to find out whether oil wells affect your property.

Statewide

General Guides

These apply wherever you are in California.

Pool Safety Requirements

Barriers, gates, alarms, drain safety, electrical bonding, equipment placement, decking, and what to know about safety when you’re remodeling rather than building new.

Energy & Water Efficiency

Variable-speed pumps, heating options, covers, LED lighting, automation, filtration, and drought-conscious landscape design.
